  • Pub of the Year Finalists

    CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale) have announced the four finalists in the Pub of The Year 2009 competition. The entrants are assessed by CAMRA members on all aspects including decor, atmosphere, service level, and the quality of Real Ale on offer.

    The finalists for the 2009 National Pub of the Year ;

    • Royal Oak Inn, Wantage, Oxon
      (Central Southern)
    • Crown Hotel, Worthington
      (Greater Manchester)
    • Royal Oak, West Sussex
      (Surrey and Sussex)
    • Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield
      (Yorkshire)

    The winner will be announced mid-February 2010.

    Julian Hough, CAMRA Pubs Director, said:
    “This is a really strong year for the competition, with four outstanding community pubs vying for the National title. These pubs have got to the final after being judged on their quality many times throughout the year by CAMRA branch members and regional directors. It’s going to be very difficult to decide on an overall winner, as I know each finalist brings great pleasure to a lot of people, not least within their respective local communities.”

  • Innis & Gunn Milestone

    Independent Edinburgh brewer Innes & Gunn has announced five million sales of their bottled beer in the last year.

    The beer produced by Innis & Gunn is uniquely aged in American white oak barrels, and is now the best selling UK beer in Canada. In September alone over 50,000 cases were sold, which is a 50% increase on sales in September 2008. Turnover for the last quarter is also up 12%.

    The company was previously a joint venture with drinks firm William Grant but has been under family ownership since last year following a management buyout.

  • White Horse Ale Festival

    The 27th Old Ale Festival to be held at The White Horse in Fulham gets underway on November 27th and will run for 3 days.

    The festival celebrates great beer from around the world, and at least 70 different drinks will be on show from brewers such as Brewdog, Nethergate, Ossett, Crown, Goachers, Fullers, Harveys and Ascot.

    The manager of The White Horse in Parson’s Green, Dan Fox, said ;
    “We hope to create a beer spectacle with plenty of interesting points for beer lovers and beer novices alike.  It’s always an extremely popular event. Going in to our 27th Old Ale Festival we hope we’ve created a beer spectacle with plenty of interest points for beer lovers, and beer novices alike, that will enable everybody to have a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.”

    The festivities kick off at midday on Friday Nov 27th and end on the evening of Sunday the 29th.

  • Pepsi Trials New Flavours

    A flavour trial is currently underway in over 30 licensed venues across the UK by drinks giant Pepsi.

    Pepsi LogoCustomers are able to request a syrup shot to be added to their usual glass of Pepsi, and can choose from the following flavours : Cherry, Apple, Vanilla, Tropical and Winter Spice.

    According to Pepsi there are no plans to expand the 3 month trial to the off-trade market but presumably the results of the on-trade trial could lead to wider availability to licensees across the country.
